Zimbabwe Women’s Microfinance Bank (ZWMB) is the first women-focused bank in Southern Africa and the only deposit-taking microfinance institution in Zimbabwe mandated to empower women and marginalized communities through inclusive financial services. Established in 2017, ZWMB was created to address long-standing barriers that women, especially those in rural and peri-urban areas, face in accessing affordable finance, business opportunities, and sustainable livelihoods.

The Bank operates with the vision of being the leading financial services provider for women, fostering economic empowerment and inclusive development across Zimbabwe. Its mission is to provide accessible, affordable, and tailor-made financial products that promote entrepreneurship, financial inclusion, and poverty alleviation, with a with a particular focus on empowering women both economically and socially.

ZWMB’s product portfolio is designed to meet the diverse needs of its clients. The Bank offers a wide range of services, including Savings and Deposit accounts, Micro business loans, group lending, and asset financing. It has also introduced specialized products targeting critical sectors such as Agriculture, Housing, Co-operatives, Small-to-Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and Mining . Recognizing the importance of holistic empowerment, ZWMB goes beyond finance to offer financial literacy training, business development support, and advisory services to help clients manage their enterprises effectively and sustainably.

A distinguishing feature of ZWMB is its strong outreach in rural communities, where financial exclusion is most pronounced. Through partnerships with government ministries, development agencies, and grassroots organizations, the Bank has successfully brought banking services closer to women in remote areas, thereby reducing the gender gap in access to finance. Digital banking innovations, mobile platforms, and agent banking models are also being leveraged to enhance service delivery and convenience for clients nationwide.

Since its inception, ZWMB has been instrumental in advancing Zimbabwe’s national financial inclusion agenda and promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those focused on gender equality, poverty reduction, and decent work. To date, over 80,000 women have benefited from the Bank’s financial products and training programs, leading to improved household incomes, enhanced food security, and strengthened community development. Additionally, more than 160,000 individuals have opened accounts with the Bank, reflecting its growing impact and reach across the country.
